|The legacy of Small's
Hardware began on a chilly day in April, 1967.
Bill Small bought the first of his five hardware
stores at the age of 40. Bill, an employee of Klingenberg
Hardware and father of 10 children, gathered loan
funds to purchase Duwell Hardware located in Cheviot.
The Duwell family had been running a successful
hardware business since early 1936.
With the support of his wife and children,
Bill Small grew a single location into a multi-store
success... In 1984, the business grew even
bigger by moving into the Harrison, Ohio market
after the purchase of Miller Hardware. This store
eventually relocated to a stronger selling area
within the city and carry a much more varied product
assortment. Bill then began the practice of drawing
from one location to service customers in another.
Service was and still is a strong point at Small’s
Hardware. The purchase of Carlson Hardware in Lockland
became the next Small’s location. Greg Small (President &
CEO) managed the Lockland location under the watchful
eye of his father.
made the store into an overnight success
by focusing on the industrial market,
offering special services and broadening
stock to fit customer needs.
The next acquisition was another Carlson
Hardware location, now known as Small’s
Hardware Roselawn. Originally catering
to apartment dwellers this store often
spouted “the highest number of customers
each day of all stores”. On March 22,
1997 Bill Small retired from the Hardware
business leaving the reins of his legacy
to his son Greg.
credits much of Small’s success to paying
particular attention to his customers...
We normally greet our regular
customers by name. We believe in
hard work at Small’s and it has paid
off. As testimonial to his superiour
work ethic and service, the Mayor of
the City of Cheviot proclaimed
Wednesday, February 17, 1993 as
“BILL SMALL DAY”. Escompassing many
years of community involvement,
unselfish devotion and being a true
friend to the community, recognition
such as this, propelled Small's
Hardware into good neighbor status.
To increase Small's Hardware
, Greg purchased
DTEPStore (a.k.a. Down to Earth Products),
an e-commerce platform serving the niche
“green” and environmentally friendly
chemical and cleaning product market.
